Teen Confidence in Standing Up to Bullies

Training martial arts, especially for the purposes of self-defense, will make you feel more confident. When you know and understand defending yourself, you don’t shy away from speaking your mind, standing up for yourself, and establishing boundaries. That confidence carries over to other interactions, like putting yourself out there to make new friends.

Our Teen program helps kids understand the art of self-defense and they will build confidence along the way. They will also understand that with great power comes great responsibility, and martial arts requires a great deal of control!

Awkward and Uncomfortable

All of us have felt awkward or out of place at times. Teenagers are constantly going through growth spurts and changes in their bodies. This can make them feel and act physically awkward and be very uncomfortable at times.

Training a martial art, specifically one that has a focus on striking and sparring, rapidly develops fine motor control. Doing stress drills and combining the different types of training we use, our teen students develop not just physical control, but mental and emotional control as well.

This control of their bodies and the willingness to be uncomfortable during stress drills translates very well into teenage life. Being comfortable with feeling uncomfortable can really turn around a teen’s experience with their teen peers.

Setting Boundaries and Dealing with Discomfort

The act of defending yourself isn’t comfortable. Neither is standing up to a bully, saying how you feel sometimes, or even trying to make a new friend.

Our training is designed to push our students outside their comfort zone, because defending against and attack will never be comfortable!

The best part about this is that growth doesn’t happen when we feel comfortable. The best and most important growth happens when we are pushed and challenged. Our training is designed to move past discomfort and focus on action: the action of defending ourselves!

Once you know and understand how to push past discomfort in one realm, it’s not hard to apply it to others. Many of our families tell us that with time and training in self-defense, their teens end up making more friends, developing relationships, and are much happier.

Communicating with Other Teens

Working with others is a skill. It’s easy to work and get along with people we like and agree with, but what about those we don’t?

Being a teen is about trying new things and finding your identity. As all teens are doing this, it can create a lot of conflict. Martial arts teaches us that mistakes don’t necessarily mean ill intent at that age, and the training for self-defense sets boundaries to distinguish between awkwardness and real danger.

Nothing beats community though! And our teen program has people from all walks of life. People come in all different shapes, sizes, and skill levels, but we are all equals on the training mats!
